Yohimbine is found in the bark of a tree in West Africa. It has had a reputation as an aphrodisiac among the people of the area for hundreds of years. In the mid 1980's, scientists learned that a chemical in the bark, Yohimbine, increased blood flow in the body.

Yohimbine is an alkaloid with stimulant and aphrodisiac effects found naturally in Pausinystalia yohimbe (Yohimbe). It is also found naturally in Rauwolfia serpentina (Indian Snakeroot), along with several other active alkaloids. Yohimbine has been used as both an over-the-counter dietary supplement in herbal extract form and has been used to enhance sexual energy and performance.

The way yohimbine works is not known for sure. It is thought, however, to work by increasing the body's production of certain chemicals that help initiate a physical sexual response.

Before taking this medication, consult your doctor if you are taking a medicine for depression, mania, or another psychiatric condition. Generally, yohimbine should not be used with these medicines.
